Hello World, From Rune
Today we are proud to announce Rune Technologies to the world. Honoring a day that commemorates the founding of our nation and celebrates the American ideals of ingenuity, grit, and courage, we crossed our own Delaware last summer and founded Rune on July 4, 2024. We did so with a singular mission: to radically increase the effectiveness and efficiency of U.S. and allied military logistics using modern software, artificial intelligence and a tireless drive to understand and innovate for the warfighter. Just a few months later, we’ve assembled an elite team, developed what our customers are already calling “the most advanced logistics software I have seen” and are forming deep partnerships with logisticians across the services. And we are only getting started.
We are a team that has spent years innovating for the security of America and her allies at places like Anduril Industries, Maxar Technologies, Scale AI and the Joint Special Operations Command. In past lives, we’ve made fire support coordinators more lethal, enabled Marines to command and control from austere places, helped secure the Southern border, contributed to advanced missile technology and kept overwatch of the globe with satellites and computer vision. We’ve dedicated our careers to making the tip of Uncle Sam’s spear pointier.
We founded Rune because we know that the “spear” we helped sharpen comes with a “tail”: a logistical tail. Every new drone we develop needs spare parts and fuel. Every soldier we make more lethal still needs food and water. Every weapon system we develop is only as good as the ammunition with which it can be supplied. This isn’t news. Adages such as “amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics” and “logistics wins wars” echo throughout military history. But when we looked closely at the tools available to logisticians on the front lines of our militaries today, we saw Excel spreadsheets, whiteboards and the best software of 2004. That is what we are here to change. We are here to bring to logistics the same innovation the fires, intelligence and command & control functions of the military have benefitted from in recent years to ensure we don’t just go “boom” really well, but that we can go “boom" for as long we need to in order to win.
To this end, we are developing a software platform called TyrOS, named after the Nordic god of war, Týr. What makes TyrOS unique is our holistic approach to logistics, our edge-first deployment footprint and our predictive forecasting capabilities. We know that logisticians don’t just care about what they have on hand (inventory), but how they can move that inventory (equipment), along which routes (distribution) and with what crews (personnel). Logistical decision-making without any of these pieces is incomplete. Therefore, TyrOS allows logisticians to manage and integrate all of these aspects, while infusing AI, predictive analytics and optimization techniques to create a well-greased logistical machine during both the planning and execution of operations. TyrOS uses machine learning to continuously adapt from expenditure, maintenance and personnel reports to forecast what will be needed, where it will be needed and how supplies can get to the point of need before a human might even realize it. Further, we know that warfighters find themselves in austere places with intermittent or entirely disconnected networks. From day one, we’ve designed TyrOS to run on “a laptop in the jungle” that may or may not be connected to other nodes in the network, and if it is connected, has a spotty 5kbps SATCOM connection. TyrOS was designed for such conditions, enabling the development of a truly resilient “supply web” that exchanges logistical data across echelon – from the lowest tactical levels to strategic – over denied, degraded, intermittent or latent networks. We know that’s the real world, and we’re ready for it.
There’s a lot our team has in common: elite technical pedigree, a bias for action, experience with and excitement for solving hard problems and the ability to make progress with a speed and agility that allows us to develop in “real time” alongside our warfighter customers. But what truly is the common thread across Runites is an exceptionally high degree of “Give. A. Sh*t.” We care. We care about our military, and we care about logistics. Our strength is our ability and desire to deeply embed ourselves in the complexities of our customers’ world. We read the doctrine, we see it in action and then accelerate how fast it can be executed. We tell everyone who joins Rune that to build the right tools for logisticians, we effectively must become logisticians. We have to understand how it’s done, so we can help make it better. Every Runite knows that “an army marches on its stomach” and that “bullets don’t fly without supply”. We are mission-aligned and mission-driven.
